Wigstock

PERSONAL expression on A CITY stage

“Wigstock” documents the exuberant bacchanalia of the Wigstock festival in NYC in the late 80’s. It offered a loud, celebratory, freeing in a bold public arena for fringe cultures, particularly the drag queen and queer communities. The event took place off 14th street on the Hudson River pier and by coincidence, Rispoli happened to be driving by on the West Side Highway with black and white film. In street-photography style photographed over just four hours, Rispoli captures the theatrical beauty and humor of the event. In this series thousands of creative spirits, celebrating with impactful, outrageous, political and social impressions are ours to view.
