Runnels

COUNTRYSIDE STATEMENTS

The “Runnels” series was inspired by the unique graphic qualities of small channels appearing in mounds of sand or soil stored on roadsides by a township’s department of highways in upstate New York. These mini hills, exposed to the elements and weather overtime form ripples or channels that carve out unique graphic patterns. When chemicals are added, colors emerge appearing in tints of blue, white or yellow that glimmer under a nighttime mixture of ambient street lighting, car headlights and camera flash. The light defines rugged, wavelike fissures, that cascade down and sculpt gullies forming small streams and small rivers. In the “Runnels” series, Rispoli reminds us of the “other worldly” landscapes appearing in our everyday lives.
